Zoology Department

The Department of Zoology in Post Graduate Campus was established in 1992. It has a long-standing reputation for research and teaching. It’s second Department to run Master of Science in Zoology after Central Department of Zoology, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu in whole Nepal. The main thrust of department is to make it a research-cum-teaching department in zoology. Research in the Department is organized into several research themes; these span a broad spectrum of biology ranging from ecology and behaviour, through to entomology, fisheries, wetland ecology, ornithology and wildlife biology. The department is conducting various researches on different specialized subjects involving students and teachers. Workshop/seminar for students and faculties and orientation for teachers are also regularly conducted. Since its establishment, numbers of students are employed in different academic institutions, government agencies and NGOs. The department has its own library, research laboratory and computer facility for Masters and PhD students. The Department of Zoology has currently 8 academic staff.

The head of the Department is Dr. Damodar Thapa Chhetry

Strategy

The long-term strategies for its development are:

  • Achieving excellence in teaching;
  • Providing strong support to professional courses;
  • Strengthening research activities in the fields of environment, wetland ecology, ornithology, wildlife ecology and entomology.

Museum

Department museum has collections of specimens ranging from Phylum Protozoa to Phylum Chordata. More than 5000 specimens are preserved which support research and teaching in disciplines including arthropoda, mollusca, echniodermata, pisces, reptilia, amphibia, aves and mammalia.

Collaboration

The Department of Zoology has been collaborating with various national and international organizations and universities such as National Academy of Sciences and Technology (NAST), Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC), World Wildlife Fund (WWF Nepal), The World Conservation Union (IUCN), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), Himalayan Nature, Nepal Biological Society (NBS), Ecological Society of Nepal (ECOS), Nepal Ornithological Society, Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN), ARCO (Nepal), University Grants Commission (UGC), Purwanchal University (PU) and North Bengal University (NBU).

Academic Program

M.Sc in Zoology

The Department has produced more than 100 M.Sc in zoology since its establishment. The Department enrolls about 15 students annually in the first semester. In order to make the standard of education at par with the international standard, the Department has implemented new revised syllabus from 2018. The two year M. Sc. course encompasses both theory and practical and carries a total of 1750 marks.

Goals:

  • to train and produce high level manpower in various fields of Zoology to meet the national demand.

Objectives

  • conduct masters level course and advanced level training in various fields of Zoology,
  • guide research and provide laboratory facilities to both Masters and PhD level students and scholars,
  • conduct seminars and workshops on recent issues or developments in various fields of specialization for student and faculties,
  • to make the master degree program in zoology more relevant to the professional needs and to national development,
  • to impart knowledge to the students on taxonomic status, general biology and evolutionary pattern of the non-chordates and chordates,
  • to upgrade the quality of the master degree program in zoology so that the students would be able to compete with post graduates of other universities,
  • to provide to the students advanced knowledge in the area of their specialization such as ecology and fish and fisheries,
  • to make the students capable of exploring fauna independently,
  • to familiarize the students with various techniques applied in zoology research and
  • to make the students aware of the various environment related problems on local and global scale.

Eligibility for admission

The candidates who have passed B.Sc degree with major in Zoology from Tribhuvan University or Equivalent Degree or any other university recognized by Tribhuvan University shall be considered eligible to apply for admission to M.Sc Zoology.

Admission Criteria

An applicant seeking admission to M.Sc Zoology must appear in an entrance examination conducted by theDean’s Office, Institute of Scince and Technology . An applicant who fails to appear in the entrance examination or fails to obtain a minimum qualifying score will not be allowed admission. A merit list of the qualified applicants will be prepared on the basis of the marks obtained by them in the entrance examination (percentage of their B.Sc examination as secondary criteria in case of equal obtained marks). Admission of the students will be based strictly on the merit list and on the enrollment capacity of the Department of Zoology, Post Graduate Campus.
